High speed Ethernet service in your residence hall room

Not online yet? Get started with high speed Internet at the U of M!

Housing & Residential Life, in conjunction with the Office of Information Technology, provides high-speed ethernet access to the campus network via an etherjack in each resident's room.

To ensure that the University's network resources will serve the university community's education and research needs, bandwidth management is used to improve Internet access for everyone.

Remember you are responsible for abiding by the University's policies for acceptable use.Can I play online games over the ResNet?
Absolutely! Help yourself, and have fun. As far as networked programs go, most online games are very good citizens. However, if your online game requires that you run one machine as a server, you will need to host the server off campus. (See the ResNet User Agreement, item # 7).

What must I do to play my XBox, PS2, etc. over the ResNet?
In order for your game console to function over the ResNet, it must meet four requirements:

  • A physical address, (also called a MAC address or hardware address,) which must be registered for DHCP access
  • A web browser
  • DHCP enabled
  • Must accept cookies

To use your gaming system on the ResNet network, you must register the physical address the same way that you would a computer. Aside from what is written in this page, the University does not guarantee technical support for game consoles over the ResNet. Though we can try to help over the phone, you are ultimately responsible for all setup and configuration of game consoles.
