Residential halls telephone guide

Getting started

Purchasing a telephone

One telephone line is included with each room. Residence hall/apartment rooms are not supplied with an actual phone. If you would like to use your room's phone line, you must purchase your own phone (analog) and answering machine.

What if I already have a cell phone?

If you have a cell phone plan and do not wish for additional voice service, you are not required to purchase a telephone and use your room's land line.

Plug your phone cord into the gray jack.Connection

Connect your phone using a regular telephone cable (slightly smaller than an Ethernet cable) to a gray wall jack that is has a label ending with -AA.

Phone problems

If your phone does not work (e.g., no dial tone, line static), please borrow a test phone from your hall information desk. If the test phone works properly, then the problem is with your phone. If the test phone also doesn ’t work, fill out a Work Order Repair Form (WORF) at your hall information desk.

Harassing or threatening calls

If it is an emergency or you feel that there is an immediate threat to your well-being, dial 911. If you receive harassing calls or need to have calls traced for any reason, call the campus police at 612-624-3550

Long-distance service

You do not have direct dial capability from your residence hall room. To signup for University of Minnesota U Card Calling through the U Card Office go to www.ucardcalling.umn.edu. This site includes rates and detailed information. If you wish to use a specific long distance carrier, ask for a non-subscriber calling card.
